it be successfully carried through, it would however represent so great an advance that any further claims on behalf of the Faculty of Medicine could properly be postpond to the more pressing claims of the other Faculties. The provision throughout of fall-time assistants should render the proposed Chairs attractive to men capable of taking advantage of the facilities for research offered by the Far East, while the re- servation of the posts of assistant for graduates of the University should provide an admirable training ground for men destined thereafter to occupy posts of responsibility in China. The University is at the same time under a deep obligation to those members of the medical profession who have heretofore given their aid as teacher, and it will be at once necessary and most desirable that this association between the Faculty and the profession should continue.
For reasons connected with hospital organization it is propable that the creation of the proposed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology must in any case be temporarily postponed, and the grant necessary for its creation will certainly be conditional upon the due fulfilment in the meantime of the conditions for which the University is responsible. It is uncertain at the time of writing whether the creation of the Chair of Medicine may not also be made dependent upon progress in the fulfilment of those conditions. Some monies at present devoted to the purposes to be served by the new Chairs will, of course, be set free for other purposes, and all that need here be said is that the minimum sum required to
